Overview
Surrounding the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy are four revered guardian shrines known as the Maha Devale complex: Natha Devale, Vishnu Devale, Kataragama Devale, and Pattini Devale. These shrines have played an integral role in Kandyan religious traditions for centuries and continue to attract pilgrims seeking blessings, protection, healing, and prosperity.
The shrines reflect a unique aspect of Sri Lankan Buddhism, where the veneration of guardian deities complements Buddhist practice. Historically, Kandyan kings patronized these shrines and considered the deities protectors of the kingdom and custodians of the Sacred Tooth Relic. During the annual Esala Perahera, the sacred insignia of these deities are carried in magnificent processions alongside the Sacred Tooth Relic, creating one of Asia’s most spectacular cultural festivals.
