Stretching gracefully across the southern outskirts of Kandy, the Hanthana Mountain Range is one of the most picturesque natural landmarks in Sri Lanka’s central highlands. Comprising more than seven distinct peaks, the range extends from Galaha towards Kandy in a north-west to south-east direction, creating a dramatic backdrop to the historic city.
Hanthana is best known for its spectacular scenery, cool mountain climate and rewarding hiking trails that attract nature lovers, photographers and adventure enthusiasts throughout the year. The range is covered with montane grasslands, patches of cloud forest and rolling tea plantations, providing stunning views across Kandy, the Knuckles Mountain Range and the surrounding hill country.
Among its many summits, Uura Kanda is considered the highest peak in the range. Adventurous hikers who reach the summit are rewarded with sweeping panoramic vistas stretching across the Central Highlands. On particularly windy days, however, the exposed ridges can be challenging, adding an extra sense of excitement to the climb.
The mountain range is also an important watershed for the region. Numerous streams and rivulets originate from its slopes, flowing through nearby villages and feeding the lush landscapes surrounding Peradeniya and Kandy. One such stream winds its way past Udaperadeniya and the University of Peradeniya, contributing to the rich biodiversity of the area.
For trekking enthusiasts, Hanthana offers several routes of varying difficulty. Many hikers choose to traverse the entire range, beginning near the Nilambe Meditation Centre and finishing on the Kandy side. This challenging yet rewarding trek covers multiple peaks, tea estates, forested sections and open grasslands, offering constantly changing scenery along the way.
The final section of the range includes Katusu Konda, a narrow ridge that is regarded as one of the more demanding and exposed parts of the trek. While requiring caution, it rewards experienced hikers with some of the most dramatic viewpoints in the region.
Today, Hanthana remains one of Sri Lanka’s premier hiking destinations and a favourite escape from the bustle of city life. Whether you’re seeking an adventurous mountain trek, breathtaking sunrise photography, birdwatching opportunities or simply a peaceful encounter with nature, the Hanthana Mountain Range delivers an unforgettable hill country experience.
