Nestled along the tranquil northern coastline of the Jaffna Peninsula, Dambakola Patuna Sangamitta Temple is one of the most important yet often overlooked Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Sri Lanka. This peaceful coastal sanctuary marks the historic location where Buddhism’s most sacred symbol—the sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi Tree—first arrived on Sri Lankan soil.
According to ancient chronicles, during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa in the 3rd century BC, Emperor Ashoka of India sent his daughter, Sangamitta Theri, to Sri Lanka carrying a sapling from the sacred Bodhi Tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. Her arrival at Dambakola Patuna marked a pivotal moment in Sri Lanka’s religious history and helped establish Buddhism as the island’s principal faith.
Historical records state that King Devanampiyatissa personally travelled to this northern port to receive Sangamitta Theri and the sacred Bodhi sapling. The king subsequently ordered the construction of a shrine and commemorative monuments at the landing site, which became an important pilgrimage destination for generations of devotees.
The original ancient port, known as Jambukola Patuna, served as a major maritime gateway between Sri Lanka and India during ancient times. Merchant vessels, pilgrims, diplomats, and religious emissaries frequently used this harbour, making it one of the most important trading and cultural links in the region.
Today, visitors to Dambakola Patuna can explore the serene temple complex that commemorates these historic events. One of the site’s most important features is the sacred Bodhi tree, believed to be descended from the original sapling brought by Sangamitta Theri. The temple grounds also contain a striking white stupa, statues depicting Sangamitta’s arrival, and peaceful meditation areas overlooking the sea.
