Bandarawela - city with the cool climes

During colonial times, the picturesque town of Bandarawela is renowned to be one of the healthiest cities to live in Sri Lanka due to its climate being pleasant the wole year round with spring like climate which favouring both flora and fauna. Bandarawela is still the best area for what in tea planter’s jargon is termed “flavoury tea”, & where some of Lanka’s best tea is produced. Pears & strawberries also reach their prime here as the climate is drier & milder than the neighboring higher altitudes of the hill country. Bandarawela is located at what is known as the center of the Uva “Health Triangle” at the other corners being – the famous Ella, tourist resort and Haputale with its stunningly captivating views and ever present misty conditions. Therefore the town is said to possess the most favourable climate in the island. Averaging around 21 centigrade, it is invariably dry & sunny, & the air is clean & fresh. Its invigorating spring-like climate favors plants & people alike.

 

Bandarawela is 210 km away from Colombo and about 150 km away from Kandy, Colombo and Kandy being two major cities in Sri Lanka. Both roads and railway transportation are available to reach the area. Bandarawela town, tinted with a colonial past resting among lush forestation has found its niche among its visitors as a base for eco-tourism.

Continuing on from the British colonial period, the picturesque town of Bandarawela has retained most of the grand old world charm with some building like the Cargills building looking exactly as it would have been during the past colonial period. The Bandarawela Hotel is a former tea planters club with comfortable period furniture & enormous bathtubs. Bandarawela is still the best area for what in tea planter’s jargon is termed “flavoury tea”, & where some of Lanka’s best tea is produced. Pears & strawberries grown freely and abundantly with the conducive climate.
