Overview
Located in the heart of Nuwara Eliya, Gregory Lake is a beautiful man-made reservoir originally constructed during the British colonial period in 1873 under Governor Sir William Gregory. Today, it serves as one of the most visited attractions in Sri Lanka’s hill country and is a favorite destination for both local and international travelers.
Surrounded by rolling hills, tea plantations, and cool mountain air, Gregory Lake offers a peaceful escape from the busy town center. The lake area has been developed into a recreational park with walking paths, cycling tracks, pony rides, boat rides, food stalls, and picnic areas. Visitors can enjoy swan boats, speed boats, paddle boats, and relaxing lakeside strolls while admiring the breathtaking scenery.
The cool climate and scenic landscape make Gregory Lake especially popular among families, honeymooners, and photographers. During evenings and weekends, the area becomes lively with visitors enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and sunset views over the water.
Gregory Lake is also an excellent place for birdwatching and nature photography. The surrounding parklands and nearby hills create one of the most picturesque environments in Nuwara Eliya.
