Stage 1. Climb to Boulder Garden

The first stage of your climb starts at the end of the Water Gardens. The stairs here are few and very easy to climb. There are a number of caves and small platforms at this level. The caves were once colorfully decorated and the platforms may have held open-air pavilions.

Stage 2. Climb to Terraced Garden

Entering the Boulder Gardens via a series idyllic stairways, you walk towards the Terraced Gardens. Many little caves dot the pathways. These were once decorated and furnished with benches for visitors to rest. On top of many of these boulders were brightly colored pavilions

Stage 3. Climb to Mirror Wall

The first stage of the challenging climb starts at the Terraced Gardens. Here are a series of steep stairs, lead up through a number of terraces to the Zig-Zag staircase which leads to the Mirror Wall. At the top of the Zig-Zag stairs is a platform where you can catch your breath and admire the scenery below.

Stage 4. Climb to Sigiriya Frescoes

A narrow 20 meter spiral staircase leads to the Sigiriya Frescoes. Painted over 1600 years ago, the frescoes depict the ladies of king Kasyapa’s harem. They are richly adorned with lavish jewelery and dressed in fine garments which barely concealed their graceful bodies. The highlight of any visit to Sigiriya, they are well worth the effort to see them.

Stage 5. Climb to Lion Platform

The climb from the Mirror Wall walkway to the Lion Platfrom is hard. The marble stairs are wide but very steep. While climbing up peek over the parapet wall and admire the grandeur of the gardens below once abloom with colorful trees and plants and roaming wild deer and peacocks.

Stage 6. Climb to Sky Palace

This is the most challenging part of the climb and the stretch most likely to give you jelly-knees and vertigo as you climb up a narrow steel gantry on the exposed side to the rock to the summit and Sky Palace. If you look below you, you will see the grooves carved into the rock surface by the ancient builders to provide the footing for the original staircase that led to the top.

Stage 7. Climbing Around Summit

You have finally made it. You are now on top of Sigiriya Rock.

Looks around you and marvel at the structures you see around you. Image how ancient workers built this place. They too had to climb this massive rock to construct a Sky Palace for their king.

Climbing Difficulty: Moderate


Stage 8. Climbing Down Sigiriya

The climb down is not as strenuous as the climb up.

Climbing Difficulty: Hard
