There are three categories in the ruins that the city was home to. Ancient buildings:
- dagabas (bell shaped masonry that look like stupas and some of them consisted of ample masonry to build towns for 25,000 people),
- monastic buildings (these are stone platforms, pillars and remains of archaic foundations. King Dutugamunu built the famous Brazen Palace in around 164 BC) 3)
- bathing ponds or pokunas (tanks which contained clean drinking water. These are scattered across the city in various shapes and sizes built with remarkable architectural designs.
