Wilpattu is one of the oldest National Parks in Sri Lanka Located in Northwest coast lowland dry zone of Sri Lanka. The park lies within the North-central & North-western providences. The area of the park is 131693 ha. An unusual feature of the park’s topography are the numerous villus: these look like lakes, though they’re actually just depressions filled with rainwater which expand and contract with the seasons, attracting a range of water-birds and wild life. Elephants, leopards, sloth bear, water buffalo and spotted deer are among the large mammals. Coastal belt and  willus  support  abundant  birdlife  such  as  painted  storks,  white  ibis,  open  bills,  Whistling  teals, spoonbills, cormorants and kingfishers. Apart from them serpent eagles, great racket tail Drongo, Malabar pied hornbills, crested hawk eagles & Sri Lanka junglefowls are commonly seen. Both water monitors and mugger crocodiles can be seen in the willus. Wilpattu National Park is the largest and was one of the most popular national parks until its position close to the front line of the civil war led to its closure in 1985. It was finally reopened in 2003.

Late afternoon proceed to Anuradhapura.

Overnight at Anuradhapura

Morning – – sightseeing of the Ancient Anuradhapura city.

A sapling of the “Tree of Enlightenment” under which the Bodhisatva attained Englightenment and became the Buddha, brought to Sri Lanka by Bikkhuni Sangamittha, who was the founder of the order of Buddhist Bikkunis (Nuns) and who was the sister of Ahahat Mahinda, was planted in Anuradhapura. This City of Anuradhapura developed greately afterwards and flourished as the political and religious capital of the country. for over 1,300 years.

This “City of Ruins” and home for “The Sri Maha Bodhi” or the “Tree of Enlightnement”, is not only one of the most  sacred places for the Buddhists but also a great Tourist  destination. This city has so much to offer to the Pilgrums and Tourists alike. Among the important sites are the great white and fine Ruvanweli Seya (Dagoba), the small but important Thuparama dagoba, Huge 75m high Abhayagiri Dagoba, Jetavanarama Dagoba which is 70n high, the Brazen Palace which has been a  nine story building of which the roof was bronze built on 1600 stone pillars (now only the stone pillars are to be seen) etc. This vast area that has been hidden away in the thick jungle for a long time and now turned into one large garden, has ruins of so many Temples, Palaces, Monasteries, Monuments and other important places of interest to be seen.

Afternoon  proceed to and  proceed to Nilaveli en route visiting the Kanniya Hot Springs.

Overnight at Nilaveli.

Nilaveli – at leisure. Enjoy the sun surf and sand. Between May – October. you could engage in many water-based activities (optional).

The northeast coast of Sri Lanka offers some of the country’s most attractive beaches such as ‘Uppuveli’ and ‘Nilaveli’.  Fine white-sand and crystal clear water provides an irresistible combination that won’t fail to disappoint any visitor!  Snorkelling around the famous Pigeon island just off Nilaveli beach is widely recognised to be a ‘must-do’ activity during a stay in Trincomalee

Overnight at Nilaveli.

Morning – proceed to Sigiriya en route visiting the Trincomalee harbor and Fort Frederick and Koneswaran Hindu Temple.

The Bay of Trincomalee’s harbour is renowned for its large size and security; unlike any other in the Indian Sea, it is accessible to all types of craft in all weathers. The city also has the largest Dutch fort in Sri Lanka. It is home to major Sri Lankan naval bases and a Sri Lankan Air Force base. However it is most famous for its ancient Koneswaram temple just next to the Fort Frederick. The sea port has played a major role in the maritime and international trading history of Sri Lanka. It is referred to as Gokanna in Pali or Gokarna in Sanskrit. Trincomalee was the capital city of Hindu king ravanan and later around 13 century by King Sangili

Proceed to Sigiriya and overnight at Sigiriya.

Morning – climb the 5c. Sigiriya Rock Fortress and return to hotel in Sigiriya.

The ancient city of SIGIRIYA was designated a cultural World Heritage Site in 1982.  It is also proposed that the site should be named the eighth wonder of the world, indicating it is in the same league as other international wonders such as the Grand Canyon and Ancient Pyramids.  Translated as ‘Lion Rock’ into English, the name of the monument indicates the entrance through which visitors begin their final ascent to the top – through the open jaws and throat (‘giriya’) of a lion (‘sinha’).  Unfortunately, the only remains of this lion figure are the gigantic paws, sculpted into the side of the rock.  The topography of the area is flat except for the massive rock outcrop of the fortress itself. This amazing rock rises incredibly over 600ft up from the scrub jungle and what is more amazing is that its flat top has an area of over 3-1/2 acres. The amazement is not over; not wanting to be second to the Nature’s creation, the King has used this space in its entirety to create his palace and fortress complexes including a swimming pool on the summit of this rock.

Afternoon – proceed to Kandy, enroute visiting Dambulla Cave Temple.

DAMBULLA CAVE TEMPLE was built by King Walagambahu in the 1st century B.C. and it is a World Heritage Site. It is the most impressive of Sri Lanka’s cave temples. The complex of 5 caves with over 2000 square metres of painted walls and ceilings is the largest area of paintings found in the world. The history of the 5 caves, containing over 150 images of Buddha, goes back to 1st century BC when king Valagambahu took refuge here. The second cave, the most elaborate and most spectacular of the five, is the largest which is 170ft long, 75ft broad and 21ft high. There is a large reclining Buddha statue and statues of two kings namely, Valagambahu who took first took refuge there and did most of the consctuction and Nissankamalla who later did more work. In the center of this cave is a large contaianer to collect the water that drips from the rock ceiling even during the dry season. This place is worth visiting not only for the cave temple, but also for the beautiful view over the countryside we get from near the caves situated at arount 150mt above the road.

Evening visit Dalada Maligawa, the golden roofed Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of The Buddha.

KANDY was the last stronghold of the Buddhist political power against colonial powers.  It is also the home of the Temple of the Tooth relic.  Its architectural monuments date mainly from the 19th century, when Vikrama Rajashinha went on a building spree, the cost of which hastened the downfall and eventual surrender to the British forces in 1815.
