There are three categories in the ruins that the city was home to. Ancient buildings:

  1. dagabas (bell shaped masonry that look like stupas and some of them consisted of ample masonry to build towns for 25,000 people),
  2. monastic buildings (these are stone platforms, pillars and remains of archaic foundations. King Dutugamunu built the famous Brazen Palace in around 164 BC) 3)
  3. bathing ponds or pokunas (tanks which contained clean drinking water. These are scattered across the city in various shapes and sizes built with remarkable architectural designs.
